![]() I wish this didn't come across as harsh as it did, but by now those are their major quirks in these scenarios. The Ping Pong matches between the cast members were also just typical SM shenanigans, and even with a few chuckles, they didn't make anything different than what you'd expect: SM Ash still sucks at anything that isn't battling, Lana is a troll, Kiawe is up to eleven, Lillie is cute and incompetent, Sophocles is just as incompetent and Mallow exists. Not to mention, they could've at least played coy like they often do on if Ash knows the subject matter or not, but having him treat it as a cool new thing is just a flagrant violation of continuity, pretty bad when I've seen a lot of people praising SM for 'bringing the continuity back' and stuff like that. Sure, you could say that this is Poké Ping Pong while DP had Pokémon Ping Pong, but that doesn't change that it's pretty glaring to introduce a different version of the same sport when, say, AG and DP both had a Poké Ringer competition and both DP and XY had Pokémon Summer Camps where rules were mostly consistent with each other in terms of structure. The first and most important issue being that this whole episode's premise breaks continuity in a big way, because Ash seemingly acts like he doesn't know what Ping Pong is, in spite of not only having played a version of it, but also having played it in an episode that has to be canon since it's when Ambipom left the team in Sinnoh, not to mention after checking both episodes the rules don't actually match (Meowth was disqualified in DP for using a Pokémon move, while in SM using moves is expected and promoted). Unfortunately, at least for me, the cons far outweight the pros for this episode. Now, for the good sides, the ping pong matches were animated pretty well for the most part with lots of fluid motions (even if it's still rather annoying to see such effort for random sports and not the battles), and a few jokes were funny, chiefly the 'faints' with the Z-Moves during the Kiawe VS Lana match. Unfortunately, I found this episode to be much, much worse by comparison, falling for the worst SM clichés and doing exactly what I feared last week for Ilima. While there were a few issues, most importantly treating Ilima as a bit too perfect, it was still more enjoyable than normal for this show, and an example of what SM should strive to be more often. last week SM had managed to actually deliver a decent episode that set up the Alolan League, brought back Team Skull at least for a bit, and portrayed Ilima in-line with his game self.
